We Are Family

We Are Family is a Hindi film directed by Siddharth Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar. The project features actors Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles, and is a remake of the 1998 film Stepmom. It released worldwide on September 3, 2010, and a day before in India and UAE.

Maya (Kajol) is a perfect mother. Her life revolves around her three children, Aleya (Aanchal Munjal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsburg), and Anjali (Diya Sonecha). Despite being divorced from her husband, Aman (Arjun Rampal), Maya has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her house and that they continue to remain a happy family unit. However, when Aman introduces his girlfriend, Shreya (Kareena Kapoor) a career oriented woman, who has a lot to learn about children, to the family, the situation immediately takes an unexpected turn.

When Shreya comes with Aman to Anjali's birthday party, she accidentally drops Anjali's cake - this causes the kids to perceive Shreya as a witch. The next day, Aman tells Shreya to babysit the three kids at his house because Maya is out of town. At a fashion show Anjali helps Shreya with the outfit. When Shreya goes to get ice cream for the kids, Aleya tells Anjali and Ankush that she is using them so she can take their dad away; soon after Anjali goes missing. At the police station, Shreya and the kids see Maya and Aman, and Shreya is told by Aman that she cannot go near the children unless she has Maya's permission.

Several days later, Maya finds out that she has cancer and tells Aman - this prompts him to move back in with the family. However, when Maya tells the kids that she has cancer, Aleya retaliates by going to one of her friend's party with an older boy. After a few days later Maya tells Shreya that she has cancer. Shreya agrees to move in and leaves her career as a fashion designer. In the following days, all three kids develop an attachment towards Shreya. But when Maya and Shreya have a fight Aman tells Maya that they should not be competing with each other. At the same time Maya faints and ends up in the hospital and the doctor tells her that in a few days she will die. Shreya has to take care of the kids while Aman is with Maya at the hospital. Maya comes home for Diwali and all the kids make a special event for her. When they take a photo, Maya tells Shreya that she is now family. Ten years later we see Aleya getting married and Shreya gives her a bracelet which belonged to Maya. Aleya wishes that her mother was there. In the end, Shreya looks at the stars and remembers what Maya said to her.

  1. I went to watch the movie with excitement for watching Arjun Rampal. I think he is a fine and versatile actor.. even better than SRK in my opinion when it comes to acting :D When I watched the movie trailer for the first time I was surprised that Karan Johar didn't have his "typical" star cast.. of Rani, SRK, and Kajol.. even the kids.

For me this movie had a fresh feel mainly because of the casting. As expected, Arjun was brilliant. Good to see Kareena back with her looks as well as acting.. Donno why she was after figure zero :D Kajol as always top notch.. she did well to gain some weight especially in later half to show the character..

I was noticing each character and how they used their make-up to show the changes in character.. Kareena specially in one scene was very simple, probably no make-up to show that she was at home, it was morning, and was busy with the kids.. Arjun through out was looking much like a photog as well as running around to balance his work & life..

There was one funny scene.. there is heavy rain and storm outside.. trees are bent almost 10-20 degrees but there were 2 small kid bicycles that were immovable :D..

Personally, it was a very tragic movie as I can relate to it, may be little overdone for tragic part.. but thankfully not a drag at all..

Fun part was watching Ami cry for 1 hour 15 minutes non-stop.. while I was finishing the whole popcorn bag... :)) :)) :))

  2. I was l’il disappointed… one of those movies…wouldn’t want to watch it again.

When I watched the trailor, I thought it’s going to be a light movie and won’t be typical Karan Johar’s rondu type of movies…but I was wrong…way too emotional!

As far as acting, Arjun Rampal has done a great job…I have always liked him but never watched any of his movies where he plays a lead role…I don’t even know if there is any. In one of the songs, he even dances better than Kareena and Kajol… very surprising..!! So yea I have one more reason to like him…ek dum full package…:D

Kajol and Kareena, both look gorgeous & I luv the way Kareena dresses up in the movie…!!!

In the entire movie, there are a couple of funny scenes…n my fav one is, when Kareena is talking to Kajol’s youngest daughter and she says: Chale Partner? And the kid says: let’s go ‘D’ (D meaning Daayan):O

Aaj kal ke bacche…I tell ya :D

  3. Will have to watch it to comment :(

  4. I agree with Dharmesh's synopsis and though I wouldnt say it is a 'fun' movie, it definitely is watchable.
